After a couple first few days in the city, we decided it was about time for a bit of fresh air. Kahlenberg was the answer.
Kahlenberg is a hill (a bit less than 500m) northwest off Vienna (or in the northeastern foothills of the Eastern Alps), with amazing views over the city, and surrounded by beautiful open Wineyards.
We took the bus number 38A to the top, enjoyed the sights
and wandered back down through a beautiful forest with an adventure park built in.
I know someone who would have happily stayed there but the weather wasn’t at its best that day, but luckily managed to avoid the rain until we were already undercover.
It was fresh and peaceful.
The changing leaves were announcing the impending arrival of autumn.
And the river flowed down, harmoniously by our side, watering the Wineyards as it reached the end of its journey in the Danube.
By the time we reached Kahlenbergdorf our stomachs were growling, so we stopped at a the first restaurant we found.
I instantly fell in love with the building.
It had that beautiful old Austrian town facade, decorated with rows and rows of red, white and yellow flowers and a wooden archway entrance which lead to a tiny white and tile patio.
Schimanko’s Winzerhaus (Bloschgasse 7, Kahlenberdorf, 1190 Vienna) open from 12 to 23 daily has to be one of the Austrian restaurants with more character and personality I’ve ever been to. Tied only with Heuriger Feuerwehr Wagner that I mentioned the other day.
The cow-skin sofas, the farm decor, and everything else in the place takes you back to another time.
The atmosphere was very relaxing and familiar, but more importantly, the food…I have never tasted a more amazingly done Wiener Schnitzel, never seen a crispier half chicken or a more perfectly spiced pumpkin soup. And the service was incredibly nice and friendly. You’ll feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
Schimanko’s Winzerhaus is definitely a must after a nice day at Kahlenberg.
Whether to recover after a long walk or simply cos the food is amazing!
And after you’re done, you can easily stroll back to town by the Danube to walk down the elephantine portions.
