Learning to Surf with Surf School Lanzarote

Let me start this post by sharing a secret with you. But if you go blubbering about it around, i’ll deny i ever said anything. Pinky swear? Well, there you go, I have loved everything to do with surf ever since our yearly summers in the north of Spain (known for its great surf!). But other than a couple tries in Scotland during my Uni years, I’ve never properly given it a go.

Not until my recent trip to Lanzarote, at least. In Lanzarote, I had to! So, imagine my excitement, when the lovely guys at Surf School Lanzarote invited me over for a day lesson at their certified school in Famara beach. This beach is relatively well-known among surfers for its rough beauty as well as its practically constant quality surfing conditions, thanks to the trade winds. Not just for PROs but for all levels!

The guys at Surf School Lanzarote are super friendly, which made organising everything a breeze. From deciding on a date to getting directions to the meeting point, everything went smoothly. And on the day, i couldn’t have asked for nicest, more attentive instructors (*digital wave to Jamie and Lena*). Even though I’m a bit of a mess and only managed to (half) stand up a couple of times, the other 3 guys on our group did after only a couple of hours! Either way, it was a lot of fun. If you’d like to know how my day at Surf School Lanzarote looked like, here you go.

How does a Day at Surf School Lanzarote looks like (aprox.)

10:15 Meeting point by Surf School Lanzarote’s office, hellos and formularies.

10:30 Off to the beach.

10:45 Introductions: Instructors and visitors.

11:00 Safety instructions and basic rules, including paddling.

11:30 First dip, let’s paddle!

12:00 Theory on hor to stand up and a bit more about safety on the water.

12:30 Second dip, let’s try to stand up!

13:30 Lunch break and a bit of theory about currents and safety.

14:30 Warm up and third dip.

Break in between and some info about waves.

15:30 So tired we can barely walk anymore, time to go home.

For such a day you’d pay about 60€. If you want to spend a bit more time trying to catch some waves, or you just want to perfect your technique, you can also go for a longer trip (with or without accommodation). For more info you can check Surf School Lanzarote’s website here. Oh and did I mention they recently opened a partner school in Sri Lanka!? I guess I may have to finally make it down there, don’t I?

Anyhow, if you visit Lanzarote and want to surf, I can highly recommend Surf School Lanzarote as a safe, and reliable, as well as fun and skilled option. And I want to thank Surf School Lanzarote for making the perfect day in the water possible! Can’t wait to go back!

It was a lot of fun! And I’m sure with enough practice we both would rock it 😉
