While working in Hamburg a few months back, I heard about this little burger place in the Schanzenviertel (the place to be in Hamburg). Needless to say, I’ve wanted to try it ever since. Lucky for me, we had a long weekend last week, so using my super-powers of persuasion, the Mr. and I headed off on a day trip to Hamburg. Well not just Hamburg, The Burger Lab was our destination, sort of.
Around the corner from the Schanzenviertel S-Bahn station, The Burger Lab is a cute little corner local with a small terrace (our place of choice given the good weather) and a carefully crafted small dining room decorated with rustic wood and iron tables, a small bar, a blackboard with the menu, and a kitchen window at the purest NYC burger joint style. Vintage to the core, The Burger Lab offers a few set burgers (classic, grilled chicken, etc) plus one or two rotating specials, all with a twist and the highest quality produce. All that at a relatively affordable price (about 15€ for a burger, a side, and a drink).
During our visit, we went for a classic burger (beef, the burger lab sauce, cheddar, salad, tomato, pickled gherkin, and pickled onions) with normal fries, a grilled chicken with honey mustard sauce (chicken, cos salad, honey-mustard-mayo, Emmental, pickled onions, and tomato) with sweet potato fries, and the Brie burger (beef , truffle mayo, onion jam, rocket and brie) with corn cobs.
The medium rare 100% German beef patties on the classic and brie burgers were a dream and so was the partnering with the rest of the ingredients. The guys at The Burger Lab know what they are doing. A match made in heaven!
The chicken burger had nothing to envy the beef queens. Especially juicy, the chicken breast was perfectly grilled and who doesn’t like theirs with a bit of honey-mustard, another jackpot! And the corn…well, see for yourself!
It was a grandiose meal I’d like to repeat soon. And if you like burgers and nice alternative places with a super relaxed and friendly atmosphere you should definitely check The Burger Lab out. Won’t disappoint. Oh and did I mention they deliver? Yup, a burger lover’s dream come true.
You can find The Burger Lab in Max-Bauer-Alle 251 (Hamburg) from 12 on Mo-Sa, and 12-20 on Su, and on their website and Facebook. Make sure to book in advance if you want to visit with a few friends as spaces are limited.
